Creating a Magnum Opus Podcast 149

Recently Andrew Pudewa and Julie Walker had the opportunity to converse with Megan Horst, editor, visionary, designer, and all around overseer of Magnum Opus Magazine, IEW’s premier collection of student writing and art. Megan manages the magazine, publishing a printed edition in February, three digital editions, and monthly e-newsletters all featuring student work worthy of the name â€Å"Magnum Opus,† which means â€Å"Great Work.† Magnum Opus Magazine began approximately eleven years ago, inspired by Dr. Webster’s practice of gathering up the best of his students’ work each year and binding it in one collection that was then placed in the school’s library. Andrew got the idea to create something similar that would feature home-educated students’ writing and artistic efforts, and the rest, as they say, is history. In addition to running Magnum Opus Magazine, Megan keeps busy through writing articles for some local Virginia magazines and running Ecclesia School of the Arts. A published author, she has written one novel called Passage to Freedom, authored a journalism curriculum, and has begun a children’s book series entitled Bailey Ballerina. Recently she designed and wrote a ballet based on the life of Corrie ten Boom that featured more than one hundred dancers. Holding a communications degree with a concentration in print journalism, Megan enjoys seeing the excitement of the students who contribute to the magazine. Are you interested in having your student published? Magnum Opus Magazine accepts work in all nine IEW units as well as contributions of poetry, fiction, and journalism. The magazine also accepts student art in a wide variety of forms. To learn more about how to submit student work, check out the writer’s guidelines on the website. Contributing to the magazine is a wonderful way to inspire and engage your students! Â
